One thing I've learned hunting
in extreme conditions is that I need a rifle to stand up to the
elements. Wood expands and contracts with moisture and heat, which
can affect accuracy. And unprotected metals rust overnight in
saltwater environs.
I also need a gun my teenage girls and my wife can
shoot well. I compromised with the .30-06, a cartridge that has
proved itself for a hundred years from Anzio to Iwo and on game
from antelope to zebra.
I started with a synthetic-stocked stainless Ruger
Model 77. I took it to Commercial Powder Coating (www.commpowder.com)
in Bend, Oregon, for a ceramic coat on all the metal parts. CPC
can take a gun and turn it out in just about any color, with a
glossy or matte finish that adds extreme hardness and durability.
I settled on matte-finish sniper gray.
Up top, I mounted an Advanced Reticle
Technology-equipped Leupold scope (www.HollandGuns.com) and, since
leather didn't seem the right choice for this gun, I installed a
nylon and synthetic Quake
Industries three-point sling. Next, we installed an SVL Limbsaver
pad designed to take the sting out of the biggest boomers.
With a little customization, the Ruger .30-06 became
a gun that'll fit almost everyone in the family and go anywhere
from Kodiak to Kona without a worry about the weather.
